Google Places SEO

I was talking with a friend this morning and he told me a story about his business and Google Places. He was searching for his business type on his mobile phone and it was not showing up. When searching for a business with Google on your mobile phone or when searching using Google maps, even on a PC or Tablet, the Google Places Business Directory Listing is the data that is used. My friend had not claimed and filled in his information for his Google Places Listing.

In our most recent newsletter I had suggested that every business should claim and fill in their Google Places Listing. So my friend took my suggestion after not being able to find his own business when he did a search. Soon after he claimed his listing he tried searching again for his type of business and sure enough it showed up in the search results on the first page.

If you think about how many people are using mobile phones and Google Maps to find local businesses you can image how important it is to be showing up when people are looking for your type of business. This is a good lesson for everyone who has not yet claimed their Business Listing.

If your business is in a competitive market with many other businesses that do the same thing as you do then the Google Places Listing becomes more of a challenge to optimize and move it up to the first page of Google. We can help you with that. We have optimized many Google Places Listings with great success. Let us know if you would like us to help you get more customers through your Google Places Business Directory Listing!

How to get your website ranking higher in search

Many people understand that it’s important to have your website get found online. But few understand how it works. There are also many misunderstandings about how it works. Many website developers think that you just have to put keywords in the right places when building a website and that’s it. There’s a lot more to it than that. Here’s a link to a short article that shows a simple and easy to understand graphic of what’s involved in search engine optimization. Click here to view the article.

Some of the easy things to do that help a lot are putting the correct keywords in the right places on the website and in the website page titles. The real power comes with building back links. This is something most people do not know how to do. Another solid technique is to build content. Building content gradually but consistently is very helpful but it takes time and effort.

It is interesting that the article mentions that Local Business Listing tactics are underutilized. This would consist of claiming and optimizing directory listings such as your Google Places Directory Listing, your Yahoo business directory listing, and others such as yellow page listings and city pages listings.

Search Engine Optimization is very doable and can be very beneficial in helping you get more traffic to your website. You just need to know what it takes and how to implement it.

Online Marketing for Small Business

I had lunch at a newly opened restaurant today. I had heard the restaurant was opening soon but actually discovered it was today because the restaurant posted it on their facebook page. Good idea! It worked. The word was spread using online marketing.

I wondered what other types of online marketing they might be using. So I went to google and typed in their name. Sure enough, up came several search results for them. However, most of them were references to their website and to the local chamber of commerce website. I did not see any references to other online sites. So they had a website, a facebook page, and some news references.

Being in the online marketing business I know that there are many online review sites that work well with restaurants such as urbanspoon.com, yelp.com, groupon.com, foursquare.com, etc… There are also the big directory sites that allow reviews of businesses such as Google Places, Yahoo Local Business, Bing Local Business. And of course there are the yellow page directories and social networking sites like facebook, twitter, linked-in.

My advice to this restaurant would be to place and/or update your free listing on as many of these sites as possible and monitor your reviews. You might think it would be a lot of work to monitor reviews but you can set this up so that it is quick, easy, and automatic.

The other thing I noticed at the restaurant I visited today was that there was no offline marketing material to draw people to them online. I thought it would have been great if they would have had a flyer on every table with a QR code to quickly get their contact information or website link, or a text message number and keyword that I could use to keep me updated with this restaurant in the future. This would surely have brought me back to them when they offered deals such as buy one meal get another at half price or any kind of deal or discount.

Many businesses out there are just not using online marketing along with offline marketing. They put up a website and a facebook page and they might even keep it up to date. But if they don’t think of the offline world along with it they are missing out! That’s really the answer. Tie your online marketing to your offline marketing and engage your customers in many ways.

How to make a website mobile

There are 1 billion PCs in the world. There are 5 billion mobile phones in the world. Many people accessing the internet do so using a mobile phone only and do not use a PC to access the internet.

Smartphones make accessing the internet much easier than a regular cell phone. However, almost 90 percent of all cell phones sold today are able to access the internet. Smartphones are not needed to access the mobile web but they do make the experience richer. Smartphones account for about one quarter of all mobile phones sold today and this percentage is growing.

Another interesting statistic is that approximately 90 percent of all websites are not mobile friendly. In other words, they do not work very well and in some cases are completely useless to a mobile phone user.

Considering all of these statistics one may think that having a mobile version of a website is very important. In many cases it certainly is important. If a business benefits (or desires to) from the online world then in most cases it is very important to have a mobile website.

As with many things, there is more than one way to make a website mobile. There are simple solutions that may work well in some cases and not in others. There are also not so simple solutions that may also not always work well.

Some ways to make a mobile website include…
1. Using an online service that converts your website into a mobile version. This is fast but sometimes expensive.
2. Hiring a website developer to create a brand new version of your website. This can be quite expensive.
3. Using a software plugin that dynamically converts your website to a mobile friendly format. This is fast and cheap but works only with content driven systems such as WordPress. It is also less customizable.

Another consideration is the domain name. A website such as www.mycompany.com can have a mobile version of their website such as m.mycompany.com or mobile.mycompany.com. Using a subdomain such as mobile.mycompany.com does not require any additional registration or fees.

Another option is to use the .mobi top level domain. A website such as www.mycompany.com would have a mobile version of their website names www.mycompany.mobi. Using the .mobi top level domain requires that a new domain name be registered. The annual fee for .mobi domain names is higher than for most other domain names. The fee at Godaddy.com at the time of this writing is about $18/year. However, there are some distinct advantages to the .mobi domain. These include the fact that the .mobi domain is an emerging standard for the mobile internet that is promoted and supported by the industry. The .mobi domain is designed for mobile use and it offers better search engine performance for mobile users. It also avoids the potential problem of duplicate content which search engines can penalize websites for.

For the do-it-yourself crowd creating a mobile version of a website can be done with some technical capability and not too much work, depending on the method used and the desired result. Most businesses will want to hire this task out as there are some tricks and time required to make it work properly.

One thing is for sure. The mobile internet is already huge and is growing rapidly. It is not something to ignore if your business needs to be found online. To find out more about getting a mobile website contact us here at Databae Systems.
